 What's This Vase Made Of?
Today I would like to talk about the different materials that vases are made out of. Vases from around the world are made of several kinds of materials, some are more expensive and sought after due to the difficulty of there production or of the rarity of the material itself. Vases can be made of woods, earth, metals, crystals, and glass, so lets take a look at these in detail.
Wooden Vases :
Wood is used a lot in SE Asian country’s especially bamboo. They come in many shapes and sizes and are usually have a generous layer of lacquer applied to give it a nice sheen or glow, this also has the additional benefit of protecting the wood from the environment. They are sturdy and can be quite elegant, I love large floor vases made of bamboo for instance.
Glass Vases :
Are great for holding flowers and are usually transparent or translucent which is nice if you would like to showcase other materials with the flowers like river stones, or beads, etc… Hand blown glass vases can also come with lovely intricate designs blown into them by the artist and can be transformed into pure works of art.
Crystal Vases :
Crystal vases usually come with etchings and designs, they can catch the light in wondrous ways bending it and casting the beams throughout a room, these are also perfect for showcasing flowers.
Metal Vases :
Metal vases can be quite expensive due to the level of craftsmanship involved in producing them, also the materials can be pricey as well. They can come embossed with intricate designs and are very sturdy and forgiving if an accident should happen.
Clay Vases :
These are the oldest forms of vases and yet are still made widely today. Clay vases have a very earthy feel to them. You can find them a lot of times glazed and painted. They are able to lend a rustic feel to any space.
Ceramic Vases :
Ceramic vases are famous for their elegance. Whenever you hear about a vase selling for tens of millions of dollars it usually the case it is Chinese ceramic. The true treasure of a collector, ceramic is made of non-metallic materials that have been fired in extreme temperatures then cooled.

 Awesome Japan Flower Vases
Great ideas can come from out of the most unexpected of places sometimes.
I just read a great article on these new portable Japanese unusual flower vases. The gist of the idea is that in a country as populated as japan their is a ever present problem of storing your things. You see in Japan each person is very limited to space and storage. It is a constant problem dealt with everyday. Henceforth vinyl fold-able, portable, stylish, flower vase made of vinyl.
The flower vases themselves are made in several stylish patterns and actually resemble glass, when not in use they can be folded up and stored using the least amount of space possible.
The idea came from Ryosuke Uehara and Yoshie Watanabe, when they were working on a shampoo packaging label for work, one Mr. Uehara left the vinyl out overnight and when he came back to it in the morning his wife had put a flower in it thinking it was a vase, this gave Mr. Uehara the great idea and viola the magical, portable, store-able, Japan flower vases.
I always love it when I hear of these, just happened upon ideas, or when someone is able to see something through a different light that the rest of us would not think of. It’s like one of those IQ pictures you know the one with the vase or it could also be a silhouette of two faces.
Anyways, these are really nifty flower bud vases that can be used for just about anything, take them on a picnic, use them outside, or just use them how you regularly would. The nice thing is they do not look shoddy and they will also not break.

Clear glass vases can be used to achieve great effects by many techniques. What’s nice about a clear glass vase is that you can decorate not only with the vase itself, but with what you put in the vase, or by decorating the outside of the vase as well. Obviously we cannot do these techniques with ceramic vases, wood vases, or painted vases.
A clear glass vase can make very good centerpieces as well, and can be decorated easily to match it’s surroundings and event it’s being used for. You can use decorated clear glass vases for dinner table, weddings, and banquets. Any shape will work like a cylinder clear glass vase, square clear glass vase, or a large clear glass floor vase.
Used with crative common atrribution license from P!gGi
Putting objects in clear glass vases is a great way to make it pop out. There’s no rule to it, you can use just about anything you would like to, at least that will fit in the vase. Try putting in marbles, sea shells, leaves, pictures, sticks, pine cones, colored water, ribbon, buttons, lemons, or river stones. These are just a few ideas. Whatever your mind can conceive of give it a try.
Another really fun technique is to paint clear glass vases. You can use different kinds of paint for different effects. But you will want to prepare the glass for painting as it can e a bit tricky at times. Make sure the glass is well cleaned and you have removed all the oil from it with rubbing alcohol. After your done painting your design and it has dried add a coat of shellac. You can paint the whole outside for a funky look, or just paint the inside. Paint some strips or dots to give it some dimension, or go Jackson Pollack with it and really have some fun by making splashes, drizzles, and drips. It’s really up to you, however if painting you might want to have a clear idea of the finished product as your permanently altering it.
Using decorating tape adds really cool effects to clear glass vases as well. Decorating tape is a masking tape with printed designs or just solid colors on it. These can be cut up to desired width’s and lengths to stick on glass without the mess of paint. Really cool designs can be made to.
Clear glass vases are also really good at presenting beautiful floral arrangements, and dried flowers or sticks like pussy willows, or plants with a nice root system that you would like to show off.

Large floor vases can add elegance and dimension to any room. Sometimes you might find bare spaces in one of your rooms that you want to add some decoration but just cannot figure out what to put there. Well, a large floor vase is just perfect for filling up empty spaces like corners and hallways.
Decorative floor vases are great as a stand alone piece but are also very good at drawing attention to other pieces, like that great painting you love to show off, or next to that expensive leather couch you just bought. They can really make other objects that were somewhat subdued really pop out. Floor vases are complemented very well with long dried flowers or sticks/twigs and look absolutely great.
The first you should do is examine the space you are trying to decorate. Is it a large room with lot’s of space in the corners, or maybe it’s a hallway that’s just a bit to bare.
Elegant Wrought Iron Hand Blown Large Floor Vase

Then think about what color, size, pattern, and shape of a vase would complement that space. You will probably want to stick with the style of the space, for instance if the room already has a contemporary feel to it, then tall floor vases with a busy design is probably not going to match very well. There are many types of large floor vases to pick from, you have your elegant traditional porcelain or ceramic, and beautifully lacquered ones made out of wood that offer a great glossy finish. Ceramic floor vases can be eye catching as well as a large clear glass floor vase. Bamboo is always a nice way to go and can be extremely strong, and I especially like a tall floor vase.
Just be careful with the wood vases, as some are not made to have water in them. For these you’ll want to stick with the dried flower arrangements or sticks. If you really want fresh flowers in them make sure you put in a plastic container first, so you do not damage your floor vases.
Once you find a nice large floor vase that will match it’s surrounding’s well, give it a nice home in the space you picked out for it. I hope it looks great. Exquisite Chinese Vase Worth A Lot!
Sometimes we take things for granted. It’s not really our fault most of the time, we are just not aware of how precious and rare some things are. For instance their was an extremely great find in the antique vase world just recently, that really drives this point home.
Vase used as an umbrella stand in spare room is a 270-year-old Chinese masterpiece worth £500,000!!!!!!!!!!
Slightly cracked and stained, an exquisite 18th century Chinese vase was found in an elderly British couple’s spare room by an astonished art dealer. The elderly couple had been using the vase to store umbrella’s. Given as a gift to the couple, it is estimated at 500,000 pounds, or if your on my side of the pond that’s $739,750.
That’s quite a find for an old umbrella stand. The couple have had the vase for 50 years and never knew it had any value to it what-so-ever, accept as a place to hold their junk when they were in no need of it.
The vase itself is a blue and white piece that was almost certainly made for the Emperor Qianlong in about 1740. The detailed antique Chinese vase shows a landscape of mountains and trees with a single house. The upper body has also been marked in Chinese “precious thing” and bears the emperors imperial reign mark. Without a doubt the quality of the painting is of the highest caliber. Unfortunately because of the condition of the antique vase it’s value has decreased significantly, and is thought in mint condition to be worth double the amount in it’s current state. On top of this, it may have once belonged to the family of Florence Nightingale, adding even more history and no doubt value to the vase.
So what’s the gist of this story… Every vase used to store umbrella’s is a priceless Chinese artifact! Uhmmm, not quite, but it certainly isn’t the first time this has happened. How about…
As we look at our lives and we see the friends, family, experiences, and cherished treasures we’ve gained along the way, we make an effort to really realize just why we treasure them so much, the stories we’ve made with them, and how much they really do mean to us.

 Exquisite glass flower vases
Lip
Neck
Shoulder
Body
Base
Glass flower vases are great for special occasions. They are commonly used for weddings, graduations, and business banquets as centerpieces. They add a certain personality and elegance to the event, and can be purchased for very little. Some of my favorite places to find glass flower vases on the cheap are Marshall’s, TJ Max, thrift stores, antique stores, and online at Amazon . If you have a wedding coming up or are in charge of your company’s event planning it might be a good idea to stock up on some glass flower vases.
Vases come in all sorts of forms, shapes, sizes, and colors. They can be clear, have ornate designs, and funky designs. But they all have five distinctive parts to them.
1. The bottom or base of the vase is referred to as the foot. The foot of a vase can be carinate which means the shape is defined by the joining of a rounded base to the sides of an inward sloping vessel, flat, or have a bulbous nature to it.
2. The body of a vase is usually the largest part of the vase and is considered the main part of glass flower vases.
3. The top of the body will have a curve inward which brings us to the shoulder of the vase.
4. From here we have the neck of the vase which gives it more height and elegance.
5. At the very top of the vase is a flare outwards this is referred to as the lip of the vase.
I would usually recommend to use the same model of glass flower vases for a centerpiece at your event just for symmetry purposes, however it’s really up to you. You could use two different models and set them every other table, or just get a bunch of different ones and go at it.
As far as what to put in them, it really depends on your taste, what the tables will look like (what color tablecloth’s/napkins), the season, and what the glass flower vases will hold. If you want to put in a large bouquet then obviously you will want a vase large enough for it to occupy. Flowers are really nice, but to add some flavor you might want to put in some stones at the base, and mix in some branches, pussy willows always look excellent.

 Beautiful silver antique glass vase
There are numerous reasons why you would want to buy a vase. It may be for purely aesthetic reasons, like in decorating and interior design. You might want to add centerpiece vases to your wedding or banquet. Or you might be interested in collecting vases as a hobby or for their value. Collecting antique vases can be a great investment, and if you have ever watched antique roadshow you know how exciting it is when you get antique vases appraised and find out they are worth a lot of money. Antique glass vases are also a great thing to pass down to your children, having a family heirlooms adds so much history, fun, and value to the piece.
But you should always do some research first before making an expensive purchase. Here are a couple of tips and rules you should always adhere to before purchasing.
1. Figure out what price range the collectible is in. You can find guides and manuals on this online or at your library. These are absolutely essential to insure you are not getting jerked around by the dealer.
2. If you find an antique vase that you absolutely love and are having it shipped to you, make sure you get appropriate insurance to cover any mishaps that may happen during the shipping process. There’s nothing worse than finding that perfect vase for your collection and finding it smashed upon delivery to your doorstep with no recourse.
3. I can’t say this enough DO YOUR RESEARCH! If you are buying the vase because you are in love with it’s stylish looks then it doesn’t matter quite as much, but if you are purchasing an antique vase as an investment make sure your getting exactly what you think you are getting.
4. Look those antique vases over and over. Search for any cracks, chips, or smudges. You are also looking for distinguishing marks of the artist, this can make the difference between a real antique vase and a fake.
5. If you are not completely sure about the value hire an independent appraiser that is certified in antique vase appraisals.
As long as you adhere to these simple rules you should be able to find and purchase antique vases with minimal difficulty and heartache. Just be careful, don’t rush it, and have fun.
